SBJ Staff

A Branson business owner pleaded guilty Wednesday to his role in a tax evasion conspiracy worth more than $1.8 million, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri.David D. Large, 51, was a partner in a travel club, first called Vacation Travel Outlet and later called Vacation Service of America, from 2000 to 2004, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Large was sales manager for the business, which sold travel club memberships claiming to offer discounts on airfare, cruises, hotels, golf, rental cars and condominiums. Large admitted not filing federal income tax returns for tax years 2000-04, saying he and co-conspirators attempted to conceal $1,803,728 in income from the Internal Revenue Service. The group received their profits from ownership of the company through withdrawals and checks from the company bank account made payable to “cash,” according to the release. he also admitted to withdrawing money in small batches, so as not to trigger reports to federal agencies required for transactions of $10,000 or more.along with agreeing to pay the taxes owed, plus any interest and penalties, Large is subject to up to five years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.

Watch Out For Vacation Rental Cheats on Craigslist

unbelievable prices No Comments »

Most of us are mislead by cheap vacation rentals that abound Craigslist. We look for means to save money when taking a vacation and many of us unsuspectingly fall for advertisements that are nothing but untrue. the internet is a place where many of us scout for good vacation deals. How many of us know how to protect ourselves from such cheats? We inevitably fall prey to such untrue offers if we are not shrewd. here are ways for you to spot cheats with ease.

If you spot vacation deals that are attractively priced at low levels stay clear of such deals. Avoid looking at deals that offer you rooms at unbelievable prices. If you are fairly aware of any location then you know how much rooms there would normally cost. so why fall for unbelievable prices and get ripped off.

Check out the vacation rental addresses using maps offered by Yahoo and Google. you will know for sure if the place actually exists. Many fraudsters use fake addresses to mislead people not making a booking and payments online. It’s only when you end up there that you will discover no building exits and you have been duped.

The best way to avoid falling into a cheater’s net is to search for well known destinations for your vacations. It pays to use the proper search words that will help you secure proper vacation rentals. Make independent searches for proper results using a craigs list search option tool. It may be time consuming but it will save you a lot in terms of money.

Dubai 2010 is looking positive

dubai tourist No Comments »

Despite a woeful year in the travel market and for the Dubai tourist market in 2009, things seem like they will improve this year. The first nine months of last year saw a not very encouraging influx of travellers to the rich Arab state, but compared to many of their rivals in the region, they still showed plenty of promise. Dubai actually witnessed a growth of tourist numbers, between January and September 2009, by just over three per cent. This was less than previously forecast by the tourism authority, but better than expected considering the worldwide recession.

Dubai launched a new advertising campaign that might have helped their tourist economy grow last year. Instead of advertising only the rich and affluent areas, they opted to appeal the budget travellers and targeted places in the state that were more affordable to the average traveler and even the backpacker type. This opened up Dubai to a new influx of tourists that were keen to see what the real Dubai was like and also be able to say that they had bee to Dubai. The new campaign is expected to keep on running well into this year as they look alternative ways of making that all important tourist buck.

Early news from travel agents and online search engines is suggesting that Dubai is growing in popularity this year as more people are making enquiries. Hotels bookings are already up on 2009 on the great deals you can get on flights to the Middle East are having a positive effect on Dubai and the surrounding countries.

Europe by Train – The Best Way to See Europe on a Budget

train travel No Comments »

My last trip to Europe was a solo four week train journey that included some dozen countries. this advantage to this was that I got to see lots of places. the downside was that I didn’t stay anywhere very long. Yet this was how I planned it, and I don’t regret it. A trip like this enables one to visit many destinations and learn where you’d like to return at a later date. in addition to this, I actually like to travel long distances by train, having gone back and forth across America that way some seven times.

Modern Europe has been made to encourage train travel. With its myriad of relatively small countries and diverse cultures (even with the increasing homogenization of the European Union and the common currency, the Euro), you can arrive in a very different place from where you started only a few hours ago.

My trip began in London (which I flew to from New York). After a Eurostar ride to Paris, I made my way to Amsterdam and then south to Italy (Milan, Rome and Florence), then still further south to Athens. Then I zigzagged back north, through Italy again, then Germany and the Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Sweden and Finland, where I went as far north as the Arctic Circle (where the sun literally does not set for part of the year).

The European trains that I took were mostly comfortable and efficient. I did not opt for any amenities such as private rooms. While meals are sometimes available, I mainly tried to eat at my destinations, as dining is one of the pleasures of European travel.

Tips For using European Rail Passes

Based on my experiences, I can offer a few tips for buying and using a Eurail pass.one, look into all the different kinds they offer. there are discounts for students, for example. another important factor is to decide how many countries you want to visit. Don’t pay for more than you need. For my own trip, I wanted to go from one end of Europe to the other, so I purchased the most inclusive pass. but if you only want to visit a few countries, look for a pass that only charges you for that.

One thing you can do, which I often did, is to use a train as a hotel room. That is, you take an overnight train. this is a good way to save money on accommodations, but can get tiring after a while.

When you are traveling, be sure to check if the train you are on accepts passes. Most do, but I had one unpleasant experience aboard one train that I thought would accept my pass and didn’t. so I had to purchase a separate ticket. if you check this ahead of time, you will avoid such scenes.

Europe By Train: A Great Experience

There is no better way to see Europe than by train, especially on a budget. You can see an endless variety of landscapes in a relatively short amount of time. Europe is set up for rail travel, so you can get practically anywhere, unlike the U.S., where many people never even consider taking trains (or buses). in recent years, Eastern European countries, such as the Poland, the Czech Republic and Romania are open to travel, though they are not included in the same passes as Western Europe.

Traveling through Europe by train is something everyone should experience at least once in their lives.

Flying high: How to get the most out of your free air miles

By Danny Teigman/The Star-LedgerFebruary 08, 2010, 8:00AM

As any frequent flier knows, racking up free airlines miles is easy. Cashing them in for a cheap winter ski trip or maybe a quick jaunt to Europe — well, that’s a different matter altogether.

Unless you love the tropics in mid-summer or have reason to travel to Akron, Ohio, any time of the year, turning those accumulated miles into free travel is getting tougher and tougher.

“The biggest pain in trying to use your miles is finding a set of days that you can actually go where you want to go,” said Chris Lopinto, president of ExpertFlyer.com, a website that tracks seat availability and fares. “All the airlines want to do is to get you to buy a ticket for the highest price.”

Travel experts say there are a couple of strategies that can help. the best bet is to be as flexible as possible about the day and time you are willing to travel. planning a trip months in advance and booking far ahead also help. Airlines add new flights to their schedules 11 months out, so the earlier you book the better.

Several websites also have sprung up to help travelers track down what seats and flights are available. and thanks to a change in accounting rules, airlines now have a greater incentive to get unused miles off their books, which could loosen things up a bit. If you’re looking for help, here are a couple of websites you might consider, some of which charge for their services:

• ExpertFlyer.com and MileageManager.com. Similar to Google alerts, both sites alert users to the latest deals that match their desired travel itinerary. ExpertFlyer tracks up to 28 airlines, including Delta, American. Alaska, Hawaiian and Air Canada, among others. MileageManager allows users to input up to five different travel plans on 10 airlines, such as American, British Airways and Continental. Both sites come with a price. after a free trial period, MileageManger is $14.95 a year and ExpertFlyer is $9.99 a month.

• StarAlliance.com, oneWorld.com and SkyTeam.com. all three sites show airlines that partner with others and may have frequent-flier seats available. Miles earned on Continental, for example, may be redeemable on one of the dozen or so StarAlliance members, and vice versa.

Travel in a Train Around Europe and Asia

busy times No Comments »

In most developed countries, traveling by train is quite comfortable and safe for solo women travelers. In countries with extensive rail lines, taking the train can be more affordable than flying, and it’s often faster than buses and/or cars. since you have the ability to walk around and stretch while traveling on a train, it can be more comfortable than other forms of transportation. And many trains offer sleeper cars. some trains even provide sleeper cars dedicated to females. Except during very busy times, such as holidays and festivals, tickets can be purchased just prior to or even on your departure date; although, if I have to be somewhere by a certain time and date, I book in advance.

As some cities have more than one station location, be sure to confirm which one you’ll arrive in when you purchase your ticket. In less-developed areas, you may want to book first-class passage or a private berth if your wallet allows. Train tickets in these countries will be relatively affordable and will provide you with a bit more safety than traveling in often overcrowded second- or third-class cars.

Rail Passes are used in 18 countries (excluding the U.K.), Eurail passes are geared toward non-European travelers and, as a result, it is difficult to find an outlet where you can purchase them in Europe. While the Eurail Aid offices located in major European cities do sell them, they are priced at a 20 percent markup. As a result, it’s best to purchase online in advance at the Eurail website. the pass will be good for a specified time period, and doesn’t go into effect until your first day of travel. Eurail Pass Flexi allows you to travel during a specified time period on nonconsecutive days. use your rail pass only for longer, more expensive, trips. if you’re traveling within a small region, such as the northwest corner of Italy, I recommend buying point-to-point tickets, rather than using a rail pass.

Other passes, such as the Britrail Pass, must be purchased in advance outside of the country you’ll be traveling in, and validated on your first day of travel, no more than six months from date of purchase. for detailed info on purchasing rail tickets for all of Europe, including the U.K. and Australia, go to the RailPass website.

While the Eurail pass may be the most well-known, rail passes are also available for trains in Japan, India, Australia, new Zealand, and parts of Africa. you can often purchase combination passes that include rail and bus, or rail and ferry services. Thomas Cook timetables provide complete listings of train schedules throughout the world. to better plan your schedule, purchase schedules for Europe or overseas from the Thomas Cook website.
