HONOLULU (AP) – Tourists visiting Hawaii will soon have to pay a bit more to stay in a hotel.

Hawaii’s hotel tax will jump 1 percentage point on July 1 to 9.25 percent. That is expected to add about $18 to the cost of an average Hawaii vacation.

The increase will be applied to stays at all hotels, time-share and other short-term room rentals, and goes directly into the state general fund. it is the final installment in a hike approved last year by the Legislature.

Visitor industry representatives say the increase will make Hawaii less attractive to tourists.

Hawaii’s combined 13.75 percent hotel and general excise tax levies is only slightly higher than the 13.73 percent average hotel tax as estimated by the National Business Travel Association.
