BUFFALO, NY – It’s hard to believe, but penguins got stuck in the snowstorm that hit Buffalo on Monday.
The Pittsburgh Penguins, that is.
The team’s bus got stuck blocks away from the team’s hotel in Downtown Buffalo.Coaches and support staff had to get out and push the bus. they were able to get it moving, and the team made it to their hotel.
This was a rough travel day at the Penguins. Their plane was re-routed to the Niagara Falls International Airport becausethe wintry weather prevented it fromlanding at the Buffalo Airport.
The Penguins play theBuffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena Tuesday night. While the team practiced Tuesday afternoon, 2 On your Side spoke to the coach, players and the bus driver.
“It was fun. It’s old school time,” PenguinsCoach Dan Bylsma said.”Growing up, you do that a couple of times a winter, it seems like. and I haven’t done that in a while, so it was kind of fun. I’m just happy we didn’t get sprayed by the tires.”
Pens goalie Marc-Andre Fleury was one of two players who did the pushing.
“I got out, but it didn’t take much time,” Fleury said.”I put the big biceps on it.”
Pens forward Billy Guerin did not leave the bus.
GUERIN: I could break a hip. I’m too old.
REPORTER: You’re not that old. what are you, about 39, 40?
GUERIN: (Laughs) I’m 39. So, I sat comfortably in the back. I get cold real easy.
Pens defenseman Jay McKee is a former Sabre, who knows Buffalo weather all too well.
“I was fortunate,” McKee said.”My wife picked me up, so I wasn’t a part of it. I was at dinner and Sidney (Crosby) texted me, and told me about it, and I just kind of said, welcome to Buffalo.”
Bus Driver Linda Lee of Tonawanda said it was the first time her bus ever got stuck in the snow.
“They thought it was pretty cool,” Lee said.”I was kind of embarrassed, but they had a good time doing it.”
You may notice one of the photos shows some of the team coaches, players and staff running after the bus. Turns out, Coach Bylsma told the driver not to stop once the bus started moving. he was afraid it would could get stuck again. That meant the guys who were pushing had to jump onto a moving bus.
“When you’re a coach, trainer, (or) anybody, there’s more to your resume than just doing what’s on the resume,” Bylsma said. “So we were two blocks away, and we needed to get out of there, and we all got out and most of us got out and pushed the bus.”
